building the garage

So, I am trying the gallery feature, which seems to display the images well and (better yet) easily.  I coached A’s and E’s soccer again this weekend again, so I thought that I’d start with a shot of Eli taking a corner kick. Gotta love that left foot. Amelia will be featured in the next post. Adjacent to Eli, pictures 2 & 3, show the Amish carpenters removing the cedar shingles siding as they work to frame the first floor and extend it to the second. We found a couple surprises. The first was the lap siding that lay underneath the cedar shingles. Who’d have imagined that we had lap siding under the shingles, although a couple of the similar bungalows down the street have lap siding. So, I suppose that we should not be surprised. The 3rd photo shows the door opening that had been part of the original porch, which was removed in the late 1980s. Notice, too, the insulation that they put behind the door–the only insulation anywhere in the whole house. Really, just the lathe-and-plaster walls, air, and framing walls. No wonder the walls become so cold in winter.

After framing the house, the carpenters turned their attention to the garage, which they framed in a couple days. The second row of photographs shows three views of the back of the house, including the garage foundation, before framing began. The third row is the same view, just a day-and-a-half later. The fourth row, continues the garage theme, showing the view from the Northeast edge of the property.  The second photo in the fourth row shows the house from the garage and the next shows the garage from the West edge of the property, where the addition meets the house. And, finally, the last photo shows the garage from right behind it.

We love the garage. It is huge, will fit both cars and lots of storage, which we need.  Tomorrow, framing of the second floor will continue, so there will be some great photographs of the house, along with Amelia’s soccer team.

Compare the photos, especially the last few, with the previous post, construction begins, especially the last couple.
