The “Amish Space Heater”

I couldn’t stop laughing as I read this blog piece in the New York Times: (Roll-n-Glow – Tale of an Amish Space Heater).  In December, I saw a few ads for the “Amish Heater” and found the whole campaign absurd because of Amish communities general adversion to electricity, though willingness to use other parts of the economic and technological grid. Also, I wondered at the use of the “Amish” as a modifier here. Read as not an Amish person but an Amish space heater, as if the attributes of the Amish community could be imparted to an object. This is a troubling use, of course, as it turns transforms being Amish from belonging to a community into nothing more than an adjective.
